A three-wheeled inline speed skate moves more easily than a four-wheeled skate. Basically, a young, small, and/or inexperienced skater learns to skate faster on a three-wheeled setup because by moving with light feet, all the emphasis can be placed on technique. A four-wheeled skate is heavier to lift off the ground, and it tends to "stick" to the ground longer with each push, making it difficult to accelerate "quickly with the feet." On the other hand, a four-wheeled skate offers more grip and stability, and therefore more power transmission. Children grow fast. As they grow, have learned the right techniques, and are looking for more top speed, a four-wheeled setup comes into play.
